Our Independent Opinion
Minerva
The basics
Minerva entered service in 1996 and after a short period sailing as Explorer II, she has re-entered the market for the resurrected Swan Hellenic brand. After being refurbished, Minerva is once again cruising the worlds oceans. At only 12,500 GRT, and with a crew of 160, she offers her 350 guests a stylish cruise. Minerva is a double-hulled Ice Class vessel with an ice rating which exceeds that required for operating safely in Antarctica. (Italian RINA Class 1-D).
We like
Minerva has a country house hotel feel about her. Her small size allows her to get into ports of call that larger ships cannot access. Her size also creates a very social atmosphere onboard and it is easy to get to know your fellow guests, Great for single travellers too.
What you should know
There only 12 Suites with balconies, so we would recommend you book early if you want one of these grades of cabin. Cruise to Antarctica are limited in numbers, so again, book early.
May we suggest
That you attend the fascinating lectures and informative library onboard to really get the most out of your cruise.
Recommended for
We would recommend Swan Hellenic for mature couples and singles who want to see ports of call that are slightly more off the beaten track. Ideal for those who like to travel with like-minded people, who enjoy culture, sight-seeing and the arts.
A-ROSA Riva and A-ROSA Stella
The basics
A-ROSA Riva and A-ROSA Stella are both 5-star river vessels, featuring 100 and 86 outer cabins respectively. Both have Juliette or panoramic balconies.
We like
The plunge pools for a quick dip and the outstanding cuisine, along with the excellent guest lecture programme
What you should know
These cruises do not operate year round, there are only 6 Danube departures and 4 Rhone departures – book early to secure the cabin of your choice.
May we suggest
The Rhone river cruise for those who prefer not to fly – you join the boat via Eurostar to Lyon where you embark.
Recommended for
Couples who enjoy European city breaks, who like to travel in style and comfort surrounded by like-minded travellers.
